FUN Volunteers

What do I need to become a volunteer?

All sorts of people become volunteers at FUN. You don’t need to have specific formal qualifications but you will need patience, resilience, empathy and tolerance. You will also need to be able to relate well to children and young people and enjoy spending time in their company. A sense of humour is essential!

We’re looking for people who are at a reasonably stable point in their lives and who don’t foresee any major changes in their circumstances over the next couple of years. You will need to be 21 or over and we also recommend that volunteers with parental responsibilities for children do not start volunteering until their own children are at least fourteen years old.

What will I do as a volunteer?

As a FUN volunteer you will meet with a child once a week for around 3-4 hours for a minimum of 2 years. The outings usually take place at the weekend.

The range of activities volunteers and children do varies enormously. We encourage people to have simple inexpensive outings with the emphasis being on having fun and spending quality one-to-one time together. It’s not about providing lots of expensive trips or gifts.

By spending time together you’ll build a relationship with the child you support. Just by being a reliable and consistent adult you’ll help them to grow in confidence, build self-esteem and develop in other areas of life. You may also be able to introduce them to new experiences that will widen their horizons and make them more confident in trying other new things.
